Kitchen Design Trends – What’s Ahead for 2023?

With each new season, our Designers note indicators that have great influence on trends in our industry. These socio and economic factors have a profound impact on design trends and 2023 trends are a direct reflection of the climate we are currently experiencing.

Kitchens are the heart of our homes. They offer a space for families to spend time together, entertain, cook, and share meals. Homeowners require flowing function and tasteful design to support their intended use of this important space.

Start with a great kitchen space plan!

Did you know that the kitchen is one of the most frequently updated rooms in the home? The US average cost to renovate an average kitchen ranges from $15,000 to $50,000, which would include semi-custom cabinets, new appliances, and quartz countertops. Lower level cosmetic remodels will cost approximately $8,000 and high-end luxury kitchen cost up to $150,000 for a 400 sf. Space.

Construction and remodel costs rose in 2021 and 2022, but we are beginning to see a softening market in 2023 and experts predict that kitchen remodeling costs are set to slow, stagnate, or possibly decline in the first several months of 2023.

We’ve compiled a list below of elements and features that we see trending in the industry this year. Some or all of them might be worth consideration if you are entertaining thoughts about a kitchen renovation.

Kitchen Design Notes:

- Homeowners are willing to spend more on their kitchen remodels this year which could be relative to the higher cost of a new mortgage. Clients are investing in their current homes.

- The cost of materials is a defining factor in the final design plan but a keen designer can help you get the most out of your finished design. We can help you keep within the parameters of your budget.

- Functionality is one of the most common reasons for a kitchen remodel. There are a host of efficiency options on the market but it doesn’t end there, consider a solid space plan by your design team. Understanding space, use, and flow make all the difference.

- The use of technology is a must-have for today’s kitchen design, especially touchless applications. Let’s face it; the world is consuming technology at the speed of light. Why not take advantage of it in your kitchen.

- The inclusion of a scullery or butler’s pantry offers high-satisfaction and functionality not to mention the additional storage that tucks out of sight.

- Mixing materials and using a variety of different elements adds depth to the design and creates a casual feel. We don’t see this trend ever going out of style.

- Use statement lighting over the island. A single well-chosen element like this can make cohesion and sense of the entire design plan.

- Using oversized or large windows in the kitchen for natural light is another current trend. Consider the amazing views just outside your windows. Capture every asset you can.

- Slab backsplashes are big right now. The use of a single, flowing material to contrast and highlight the cabinets and countertop create a statement while keeping too many elements from feeling cluttered. No, don’t use a low 4 inch backsplash. It’s all or none in this application.

- All white and gray/white kitchens are on their way out. Our current economic situation moves us to gravitate toward warmer, cozier spaces. These start with color and a strategic color palette by your design team.

- Before you choose open shelving, consider longevity in your design. Open shelves a trending toward being out this next season.

- Using real wood instead of faux wood is definitely a trend. Our clients want to connect to natural substances instead of manufactured elements. Again, these decisions support a cozier, warm environment.

- If you are installing one island, why not incorporate two. They add additional storage, seating, and work space.

- Using color on a kitchen island is the perfect place to try a new color and can often be enough color in the room to settle the design. It’s also a great way to incorporate two-tone cabinets, which is quite popular these days.

- Upgrading the countertop is a fantastic way to create a more luxurious feel in your kitchen. Other popular upgrades may include the layout, which can be changed with the cabinets, lighting, which will also enhance the functionality of the room. The backsplash can also have a big impact on style and aesthetics, along with the color scheme, all of which can be easily upgraded any time you change something like the countertops, cabinets, or backsplash in the room.
