Beyond the "Pretty Picture": How We Uncovered Hidden Luxury in a 1980s Remodel

At Scottsdale Interior Design Group, we believe that great design is as much about problem-solving as it is about aesthetics. Our recent Rio Verde project is a perfect example of how "Renovation Vision" can find luxury in the most unexpected places—like four feet above a dated ceiling.

Luxury Home Kitchen Remodel

The Discovery: When we first walked into this 1989 home, the layout was "broken." A partial wall isolated the kitchen, and the ceilings felt low. As we began the remodel, we made a discovery: the structural joists were actually four feet higher than the ceiling line.

Instead of sticking to the original plan, we pivoted. We raised the ceiling, designed a graduated plank insert, and added hidden cove lighting. The result? A soaring architectural feature that transformed the entire feel of the home.

Jackie was always open to brainstorming... She helped us source a company that could create a French Chateau inspired etched diamond pattern beveled glass design. It was both unique and stunning.

The contractor we chose was suggested by Jackie, and was absolutely the best contractor we ever had the privilege of working with.

We literally raised the ceiling in this breakfast nook.

Designing for the Person, Not Just the Space: One of our favorite parts of this project was the "Memory Wall." Rather than buying generic decor, we curated the clients' own "treasures" to tell their life story. We also created a custom-lit gallery for a prized Scotch collection—proving that high-end design should always reflect the person living there.

Technology Camouflage: I designed custom matte black tile vertical caps to camouflage large audio speakers, incorporating hidden accent lighting for a sophisticated "glow" effect.

Narrative Design: Rather than buying new "filler" decor, we curated a "Memory Wall" using the clients' existing treasures, ensuring the modern space felt like home immediately.

Working with Jackie was like working with one of your best friends. She listens closely and uses her enormous expertise as a soft cushion to bounce ideas off. Never demanding or pushy, she has a wonderful way of helping facilitate the client’s own wisdom and beauty. We adored the fact that WE felt we were brilliant when she was done with us.

Technical Mastery: From camouflaging high-end audio speakers with custom matte tile to sourcing hand-etched glass from across the Phoenix area, every detail was handled with precision.

Closing: As our clients told us, we want you to feel "brilliant" when your home is finished. If you’re ready to see the hidden potential in your space, let’s talk.
